What's in the air I breathe?

For some months now I've been really analysing the contents of the air I'm breathing, not the actual air, but metaphorically, but just as if I'd been breathing in polluting toxins, I've come to realise that I'm breathing in things that are harming my mental health. For the last two weeks I've tried the following things:

  • Withdrawal from th news or reading any articles on line, using books for reference instead

  • No doom scrolling on social media. I run a business, so I've had to do a handful of posts, but I've limited my interactions to anyone commenting on my work. This has caused me much consternation as being a small business, I've always tried to use social media to support others by liking and commenting on posts. However, my mental health is so parlous of late that a total abstinence from scrolling social media posts is on the only way forward. I am also working on ways forward where I can avoid relying on SM for my business, which will be more congruent with the direction I'd like my business to go in

  • Reducing phone useage to checking emails/whatsapp just once a day and putting my phone out of my sight when not directly using it. All notifications have been switched off and the sound has been on silent for some time

  • My usual habit of listening to podcasts about politics have been switched for catching up on classic works of literature of audiobook including Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights

  • Time in the evening is now spent reading books or watching nature documentaries instead of paying mindless attention to my phone

I'm only a couple of weeks in but I can say that so far I feel much better and more positive than I have done for some time. I'm feeling that the air I'm breathing in is clearer and fresher.
