I'm not sure why but I'm feeling the urge to write rather than draw this week. It must be the heat. This piece is about how Grimsby is full of little networks of folks. It's Connections. It's also about how when your partner is from Chesterfield you have to invent little epithets to describe people so he knows who I'm talking about! x

Grimsby's circularity

My friend came for tea last night.

You know the one. Her ex-husband's

mum is my other friend's auntie's partner.

This friend's married to a guy

I went to school with, and he grew up

with my friend's dad. Their mums are mates.

I grew up down the road from them.

Five doors along another family's daughter

fell in love with a guy I worked with

years ago. And from there I know

my other friend, whose husband's cousin

is also my mother's cousin, and her other

cousin's daughter's ex is now seeing

another friend. She works in a shop.

My friend who came for tea saw her there

the other day. He's got a chalet on the Fitties.

So does my friend who came for tea's

new partner's mum, and so do I. And

so does my other friend, and she knows

the family from Scunthorpe, who come to

Cleethorpes every year to rent my chalet.

Do you know who I mean?
