My working days often take place against the background of the podcast The Rest is History. I first heard about Echolands by Duncan Mackay through Tom Holland, one of trhe presenters on the show. Although my We Are Marshy Folk project is obviously about the former Grimsby marshes, I found this book really helpful as the author bases some of his research on actually walking the landscape and making connections to the historical sources. I know from walking the coastline of the Humberston Fitties how intense familiarity with a landscape and how it evolves over the seasons can really help you understand the geography and heritage of an area. The same applies to the years I've spent cycling around Grimsby - I'm familiar with each bend and bump in the road. I'm hoping that all this knowledge will inform the historical research I'm doing and I can do as good a job as Duncan Mackay in bringing a lost landscape to light.
