The marshes and mounds of Grimsby.
The marshes and mounds of Grimsby.

Artwork for a school workshop talking about Seven Hills of Grimsby*. I will read this to the students to get them thinking about Grimsby before the Vikings, and what might have attracted people to this area. How the mounds would have provided important dry land in this wet hinterland between land and sea. There were no doubt many more than seven hills in this area, but a 1825 map, created for a clergyman's book would have liked the idea of allying Grimsby with Rome, and its seven hills. Most of the town's hills have been quarried away for their sand and gravel, with only Cun Hu and Holme Hill remaining.

*This has been funded by Paul Henderson as part of his Yarborough ward funding. Three of the seven hills are in the Yarborough Ward, Cun Hu, Toothill, and Hell Hill.
